What is CIS-L?

CIS-L was created in March, 1994, and has 650+ members. CIS-L is an academic and practitioner forum for discussions on careers in information systems, both from a business and computer science perspectives. Approximately 50% are academic members, 40% are practitioners and 10% are students (BS,MS,Ph.D.). The discussion varies from career trends, curriculum, placement, (but not job openings or applications, nor any sort of commercial messages), etc. Also, people bring their professional problems and look for suggestions from other members in a variety of topics. To see the latest survey of members' interests and background send to CIS-FSERV@UBE.UBALT.EDU the one-line message: SEND GENERAL.SURVEY, or click here. CIS-L also maintains a data repository to facilitate data exchange through e-mail and gopher. See CIS-L FileServer for more details.

How to use CIS-L?

CIS-L is an Internet and Bitnet discussion list. Therefore CIS-L has its use restricted to scientific and professional knowledge exchange -- no commercial posting is allowed. If you need to know precisely what is and what is not allowed please send to FILESERV@UBE.UBALT.EDU the message:

SEND NETWORK_POLICY.CREN
SEND NETWORK_POLICY.NSFNET

The first file is the acceptable use policy of the Bitnet, and the second of the Internet. In case of doubt of the nature of a posting please contact the CIS-L Editor at earvaben@ube.ubalt.edu .

In addition to these policies CIS-L has only three rules regarding posting:

To request a service send you messages to LISTSERV@UBE.UBALT.EDU . To send messages to all members send a message to CIS-L@UBE.UBALT.EDU . Please remember that when you REPLY you most probably is sending the message to the list (all members). To send a reply to an individual SEND the message to him/her. CIS-L is open for posting by subscribers only, and subscriptions are no longer automatic.

How to subscribe to CIS-L?

To subscribe send a message to earvaben@ube.ubalt.edu with your full name and affiliation (where you work or study), or click here . All subscriptions will be processed within a 12 hours period.

What should you do if you do not have Internet experience?

Finally, we advise, for whomever has less than one year experience in the Internet, the downloading of an Internet hypertext help file (freeware) for Windows --InfoPop -- through anonymous FTP or using a BBS. It is also highly recommended that you take at your own pace the Patrick Crispen's Internet Roadmap course.

If you would like to gain experience with LISTSERV before you post to CIS-L you are encouraged to subscribe to HELP-NET -- a forum for learning and obtaining help on the Internet. Send to LISTSERV@VM.TEMPLE.EDU the message: SUB HELP-NET firstname lastname. Since this is a busy service (10 messages a day), I suggest that after you subscribe switch to receive a daily digest rather than messages as posted. To receive the digest send to LISTSERV@VM.TEMPLE.EDU the message SET HELP-NET DIG
