About the Collection
Langsdale Library has been a federal depository since 1973, one of nearly 1,300 depositories nationwide. This means the library receives documents through the United States Government Printing Office for free; in exchange, our library has agreed to make these documents available to the public. However, borrowing them is limited to faculty, staff, and students in the University System of Maryland.
We are a selective depository, receiving about 26% of all the documents the U.S. Government publishes each year. Our collection focuses on materials that support the University of Baltimore curriculum. Agencies that are well represented in Langsdale's depository collection include the Departments of Commerce, Housing & Urban Development, Justice, Labor, State, and the Treasury. In addition, we procure many Federal Reserve Bank and Government Accountability Office (GAO) documents.
There are several other depositories in the Baltimore metropolitan area, each with a different collection emphasis. For a complete list of depository libraries in Maryland, please see the list of Federal Depositories in Maryland.
Public Access to Government Websites
While the use of Langsdale's subscription electronic databases is restricted, the library does make online government resources available to the public. There is a PC on the second floor near the reference desk that allows access to government websites --as well as the library's catalog-- with no login required. You can find online resources through the library's catalog, by using FirstGov, or by using a search engine like Google's Uncle Sam.
For more information about online government resources, please contact the Reference Desk at 410-837-4274, or langref@ubalt.edu
