Langsdale Departments:
Access Services (formerly Circulation) manages borrowing services throughout the University System of Maryland and creates library accounts for patrons and off-campus access to electronic resources. The Circulation staff maintains both hard copy and electronic reserves for UB courses.
Reference offers numerous services to students, faculty, and staff including general reference (via phone, chat and email as well as in person), library instruction, and interlibrary loan services. The department supports both on and off campus access to more than 50 online databases. The department conducts course-related instruction sessions as well as general research and web design workshops and library orientation sessions. Reference librarians design a variety of print, online and video-based instructional materials for course-related research. Interlibrary loan obtains books from outside the University System of Maryland and articles from journals not held in Langsdale. Reference librarians also serve as the primary selectors for book, journal and electronic resource purchases.
Special Collections acquires the records that document the making of the modern city of Baltimore. These include more than 70 distinct archival collections such as civic organizations, the built environment, and public and nonprofit agencies. Added to these are scores of oral histories, photographs, architectural plans, and the papers of prominent Baltimore citizens. The undergraduate major in Community Studies and Civic Engagement builds on the strength of Langsdale’s unique archival collections.
Systems oversees hardware and software issues in Langsdale Library and monitors system performance, trains staff, faculty and students, and implements upgraded versions of the software. The systems librarian also maintains the library website.
Technical Services supports the mission of the library by ordering, processing, cataloging and maintaining items in Langsdale’s collection. Technical Services librarians actively search for creative means to build the library’s collection and generate revenue for the library through its annual book sales and partnerships with dealers and collectors.
