UB Faculty are in Scholarly Journals, but We Can't Get Them Out.
by Michael Shochet
Many University of Baltimore faculty publish articles that appear in one of the more than 50 databases of journal and magazine articles to which Langsdale subscribes (see below). However, even when a UB faculty authors a paper, we do not always have a copy of it available (although we can usually get one through InterLibrary Loan). Once published the article typically becomes the property of the journal or magazine in which it was published, and even the author may not have the right to make further copies.
Different journals have different policies regarding online databases; some make their articles available immediately, while others will maintain exclusive access to their articles for a year. Still others provide only abstracts, which forces researchers to obtain a copy of the journal if the full text is needed. The library has a few hundred journals in print, but they are becoming more and more expensive.
Faculty and researchers at universities research, write papers and publish their findings in journals, but then faculty, researchers and libraries at the same institutions where the authors conducted their research have to spend an increasingly large percentage of their budget to subscribe to these journals. Part of the purpose of scholarly publishing is supposed to be the sharing and dissemination of information in the academic community, but the rising costs and restrictions on access are stifling some of the free flow of ideas.
One alternative that is growing in popularity is Open Access. Open Access journals keep costs down by forgoing print publications and placing their articles online, from where they can be downloaded and distributed free of charge. This does not mean that anyone can publish an article in an Open Access journal; all articles undergo a peer review process, and several Open Access journals have achieved high impact ratings for being highly cited. To learn more about Open Access, see Peter Suber's excellent Open Access Overview.
Faculty Publications in Langsdale Databases
Some UB faculty’s recent publications are available in Langsdale Library’s databases; while a few of these are available to members of the UB community in full-text format, most are available only as abstracts, despite the fact that the author teaches here on campus.
