University of Baltimore student Mihaela Ciulianu, a first-semester transfer student from Romania majoring in finance in the Merrick School of Business, was a participant in the Clinton Global Initiative's "Sweet 16"—an annual competition of ideas for tackling global problems as submitted by college students from around the nation. Ciulanu's "Red to Green" proposal involves the development of a strategy to provide financial literacy and money management opportunities for families who struggle to make ends meet. Ciulanu will develop a business plan and work closely with nonprofits to identify people in Baltimore who could benefit from this type of service.
Ciulanu's vision was among a group of ideas submitted by college students from across the country, included in the bracket entitled "Peace and Human Rights and Poverty Alleviation" and one of four promoted on the CGI website.
According to the Clinton Global Initiative, "Sweet 16" commitments are selected based on their "unique and innovative approach" to addressing a major global issue. In this "competition of social innovation, enterprise, and sustainability," winners advance each round based on the number of votes received.
The students involved are preparing to attend the CGI University at the end of this month. President Clinton will announce the "Sweet 16" winner onstage on March 31 at 4 p.m. at the closing plenary of the fifth annual CGIU meeting in Washington, D.C.
