Johnetta Hardy, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the University of Baltimore's Merrick School of Business, says the recent work stoppage at Berger Cookies is the kind of crisis that a small business must be ready for—including plans for preventing the crisis from happening at all.
"Many small businesses think that crises only happen to big companies, like Enron and Exxon," Hardy told The Baltimore Sun on Feb. 22. "But small companies often have a greater reliance on a small customer base," and small businesses must set up plans and be prepared to delegate responsibility when necessary.
"The first step in crisis management is to prevent a crisis in the first place," she said.
