Anais Hibbert, a student in the University of Baltimore's accounting program in the Merrick School of Business, was one of 103 minority college students to graduate from the 2018 American Institute of CPAs Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop. The invitational program is aimed at diversifying the accounting profession and helping candidates succeed at obtaining the CPA license.
According to Jan L. Williams, associate professor of accounting in the business school, Hibbert recently spent three days in Atlanta with other minority students from around the country networking and learning more about the accounting profession.
"I had the opportunity to participate on a panel at the conference and share what we are doing in our accounting honors program with accounting professors and professionals," Prof. Williams said.
Hibbert is in UB's Helen P. Denit Honors Program and was a mentee in the Beta Alpha Psi mentoring program last semester. She will be eligible for Merrick's accounting honors program after completing intermediate accounting next semester.
All participating students in the program have declared majors in accounting, finance or tax, and will pursue a CPA license. This year's class of students represented a wide scope of universities and colleges across the United States and Puerto Rico.
"This event aims to strengthen students’ professional skills and understanding of the limitless possibilities and benefits of earning the CPA credential," according to the AICPA.
