The Director of the Low-Income Tax Clinic will hold the non-tenured faculty rank of Professor of the Practice. In this 12-month position, s/he teaches and administers the law school’s Low-Income Tax Clinic, in accordance with academic policies determined by the School of Law’s faculty and ensures compliance with academic policies and ABA standards. Under the supervision and in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Experiential Education, the Director supervises student attorneys and a clinical law fellow to ensure that clients receive high quality representation and that students learn about the effective, ethical, and reflective practice of law.
The Director screens cases to insure they are appropriate for the Clinic. The Director supervises student attorneys working on cases involving tax controversy issues. As part of the supervision, the Director meets at least weekly with students, accompanies students to court, and works with students on other activities, including education and outreach initiatives. The Director also teaches a weekly seminar on tax law and skills related to the practice of law more generally. The Director is responsible to apply for grants and manage grants including grant reporting. The Director partners with other organizations who represent low-income taxpayers and provides outreach and education to the broader community.

Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Supervision
o Screen cases looking for tax controversy issues appropriate for clinic.
o Supervise cases and student attorneys meeting at least weekly with students, reviewing and providing comments on student work, accompanying them to court, and working on other activities, including education and outreach initiatives.
o Teach a weekly seminar on tax law to help students synthesize their clinical casework, learn about substantive tax issues and develop their lawyering skills, ethical awareness, and professionalism.
o Participate in weekly clinical law meetings.
Grant Management
o In collaboration with the Office of Sponsored Research, the Director will apply for federal grants and/or any applicable private grants
o Manage grants including ongoing grant reporting and budgeting.
Partnerships and Community Engagement
o Consult and partner with other clinics and organizations such as MVLS and Taxpayer Advocate Service.
o Provide education and outreach to the community.
Required Qualifications
Education: Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school
Experience:
• At least 3 years of experience as a practicing lawyer in matters relating to federal income tax controversy.
• Qualified Tax Expert (QTE) or ability to become a QTE.
• Admission to Bar of any state
Preferred Qualifications
• Admission to the Maryland Bar
• Teaching experience

o Strong academic record and/or other indicia of ability to perform at a high level
o Commitment to work for low-income clients
o Strong interest in teaching
o Ability to foster relationships and work with diverse groups
o Excellent interpersonal skills
