Director of Finance and Administration

Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences

Vacancy Number 300284

Position Type: Regular, full-time exempt position with full, competitive benefits package
Opens: 01/18/13     Closes: Open Until Filled

Salary: Mid to Upper $80,000 Range

At the University of Baltimore’s Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, our students learn, work and study at the intersection of the arts, humanities, sciences and technologies. We believe our students cannot rely solely on a single academic subject to prepare them for life ahead.  From foundational courses that introduce the building blocks of lifelong learning (communication, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning) to specialized upper-level classes, our students learn broadly and deeply in programs across the College to build upon their strengths and sharpen their skills to achieve success in any number of fields.  The college is a vibrant, lively place to live and learn, and it's the center of cultural and intellectual excellence for the University of Baltimore. We view ourselves as the heart of higher education at UB.

Now is your chance to join the leadership of this dynamic College as its next Director of Finance and Administration.  We are looking for a strategic and intuitive leader who can proactively contribute to the collaborative development and enhancement of the College’s financial and administrative operations.  Working closely with the Dean and academic leadership, the successful candidate will manage approximately $8 million dollar budget and fiscal operations related to a variety of funding sources including the state, various endowments, grants and contracts.  Accomplishments are directly influenced by this professional’s guidance and hands-on energies contributing to the College’s ability to anticipate and respond to the financial challenges facing higher education.

Working effectively with the Provost Office and the University’s Budget and Comptroller offices, this successful professional will prepare and administer the annual budget and supplemental funding.  Additional partnering with the Office of Sponsored Research provides this leader the opportunity to explore increased funding in accordance with federal, state and UB policies.  In this challenging and complex environment, job satisfaction for the incumbent comes from serving our faculty and students through the strategic and financial planning that enables academic and research programs to thrive.  It’s all about getting to “Yes” - requiring an interpersonal style that works well with academic leadership, administrative colleagues and appreciates the challenges and rewards of working in a higher education culture.

In addition to financial operations, the well-rounded successful candidate will bring thought leadership and strategic planning to other operational areas including space, equipment and property inventory management, technology needs and upgrades, and service contracts.  Working in collaboration with the University’s Office of Human Resources, this effective professional coordinates faculty and staff recruitments and appointments while advising the Dean on the use of vacancies and tracking salary savings.

Considering the direct and in-direct efforts of this achievement-oriented professional, he or she is expected to meet the qualifications of a Bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, accounting, finance or related field with 5-7 years of related progressive business and/or administrative experience.  Knowledgeable and experienced candidates with a Master’s degree and/or higher education experience are a plus.

If advanced in this recruitment, the qualified candidate is expected to articulate his or her proven expertise in financial analysis and reporting, knowledge of budget, procurement and grants management, familiarity with workforce management programs and knowledge of PeopleSoft or other ERP financial tools and technology.  Additionally, demonstrated experience in strategic analytical thinking, networking and proactive partnering, excellent organizational abilities and effective and tactful communication skills exhibiting credibility, trust and confidentiality are all must have’s for this professional.

If you are in the market for that next great career opportunity, willing to fast-track your development into the strategic while keeping one foot in the operations, bringing a commitment to challenging the status quo and creating innovation, cost-savings and increased efficiency and effectiveness, this is your opportunity.  We have great dreams and a future of exciting possibilities, join us in the journey.
