The University of Baltimore believes in maintaining an environment that promotes the safety and worth of every individual. Every student should feel safe to participate in activities and organizations without compromising their health, safety, or welfare. Therefore, hazing is unacceptable and a violation of University policy.

What is hazing?

Hazing is defined as a reckless, intentional, or knowing act, committed by a person or concert of persons, which manifest a situation that (1) is committed in the course of an initiation into, an affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in, a student organization; and (2) causes or creates a risk, above the reasonable risk, of physical or psychological injury.

Some examples of hazing include:

  • causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to consume food, liquid, alcohol, drugs, or other substances;
  • causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to perform sexual acts;
  • any activity that places another person in reasonable fear of bodily harm through the use of threatening words or conduct.

hazing prevention

Hazing prevention at UBalt focuses on reaching community members by multiple methods and at different levels of campus involvement. Campus-wide hazing prevention includes the creation and publication of UBalt's Anti-Hazing policy which outlines the reporting and response process for the UBalt community. Training materials have also been included in the required training of employees and student organizations. Additionally, digital communication through our social media platforms provides broad community education on how to prevent and report hazing.

Below are a few ways you can build healthy groups and teams while at UBalt:

  • participate in community service projects like UBalt's MLK Day of Service and 50 in 5 challenge;
  • identify common times for new and returning members to hang out for group meals and study or planning sessions;
  • work on personal development through activities like vision boards and goal setting and completing your free Clifton strengths assessment.
