Over the past few decades, the U.S. has seen a spike in sprawl. Forests and other undeveloped land have fallen victim to and increase of people moving from urban to rural areas. David Thaler’s lecture will focus on how modern zoning regulations and road codes have created a landscape that is degraded, incoherent and car-dominated, as well as possible solutions for the future.

About the speaker: David Thaler is a fellow of both the American Society of Civil Engineers and the National
Society of Professional Engineers. He is also a surveyor, land planner and land use consultant. His firm, D.S. Thaler & Associates, Inc., has designed hundreds of communities in the Mid-Atlantic region.
