Classical percussion soloist and educator Peter Ferry will visit the University of Baltimore campus on Tuesday, Sept. 29 as a special guest teacher in classes and as the leader of a multimedia recital as part of the University's ongoing Spotlight UB live performance series. The performance will start at 7 p.m. in the Wright Theater, located on the top floor of the Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave.
Ferry's appearance is an example of Spotlight UB's mission of complementing education with exciting forays into various arts and media. The percussionist will visit an Arts and Ideas class led by Jeffrey Hoover, associate professor in the Klein Family School of Communications Design, to discuss artistic collaboration.
Ferry is a soloist who specializes in performing contemporary compositions using a variety of traditional and non-conventional percussion instruments including timpani, pieces of junk, and artillery shells. His work is known for being highly entertaining and incorporating audience participation and interaction. Ferry uses a variety of other audio and visual media, transforming his playing into conceptual performance art.
In addition to solo and collaborative concerts, Ferry also coaches music students and lectures on the creative process of interpreting compositions to students from Kindergarten to college. In 2013, he delivered a TEDx Talk about his performance philosophy called "Striking the Edge" during a week-long residency at the Moses Brown School. He also developed the Micro-Concert Series, which features 20-minutes performances followed by audience discussion and reflects Ferry's goal to make classical music approachable and engaging for all.
Ferry's appearances in classrooms and concert at UB are funded by a Gordon Trust Grant.
Tickets to the concert are available online at etix.com and in the Wright Theater lobby one hour before the show. Tickets are free to all students and $5 for the general public.
