Writing in The Huffington Post, University of Baltimore student Evelyn Atieno recounts the year that has gone by since the death of Freddie Gray and Baltimore's subsequent civil unrest, and what the city has experienced since then.
"We weathered the storm together," she says.
Atieno, whose online magazine, Affinity, is designed for young people who are interested in social issues, asserts that while Gray's death prompted a powerful demand for reform, many local residents have seen little change. But she sees hope in the political process, including the crowded race for the city's next mayor.
"This is a great time to be a Baltimore resident because the next mayor we choose, will decide the fate of the city. We have a lot of internal issues we have to fix, which includes schools," Atieno writes.
Atieno is a freshman in UB's Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.
