Joel Stevenson, a graduate student in the Interaction Design and Information Architecture program at the University of Baltimore, has been selected to participate in the IDEO + BerkleeICE Summer Lab. The joint program, sponsored by global design company IDEO and Berklee College of Music's Institute for Creative Entrepreneurship (BerkleeICE), is a full-time paid internship that gives students the opportunity to "explore the challenge of capturing quality information about the creation of music for use in block chains, digital ledger technology, and decentralized systems." The internship begins in July.
"A fellow UB classmate and friend told me about the music and tech-related summer internship prorgam with IDEO and BerkleeICE," Stevenson said. "Since my goal is to work full-time as an interaction designer and I've been a music producer for over 10 years, I felt the opportunity was too relevant to pass up."
As an intern, Stevenson will be placed on an interdisciplinary team, learn fundamental design-thinking methodologies from IDEO designers and have access to emerging technology and music industry experts. The project teams will be guided through a three-week design sprint methodology resulting in prototypes of new consumer and creator experiences that will be demoed at the end of the internship.
"I'm really excited for Joel," said Greg Walsh, director of the Interaction Design and Information Architecture program. "Getting selected for this is a true testament to Joel's abilities as well as our program's focus on user-centered design, creative problem solving and user research."
In order to be considered for the IDEO + BerkleeICE Summer Lab, Stevenson submitted his curriculum vitae and participated in an intensive one-day audition in Boston, where he worked on a team design project with oversight from Berklee faculty and IDEO designers. Audition particants were evaluated throughout the day and finalists were selected and notified a week later.
Stevenson will attend the IDEO + BerkleeICE Summer Lab from July 11 through July 29. He will receive a $1,500 stipend for participation and earn course credit.
