The life and legacy of Barbara A. Green—a tireless community organizer and champion for the rights of women, people of color, and the citizens of Baltimore—will be celebrated with a new University of Baltimore scholarship program designed to benefit city youth. The scholarship drive will get underway with a fundraiser golf tournament on Friday, Sept. 16 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Clifton Park Golf Course in Baltimore. Proceeds from the tournament will go toward the scholarship and the Cecil-Kirk Athletic Council/Greenmount Recreation Program.
"Ms. Green was one of the unsung heroes of 20th century Baltimore," said Kurt L. Schmoke, president of the University of Baltimore. "She was a neighborhood leader, a political activist, a public servant, and a wise adviser to state and local elected officials."
Born in East Baltimore, Barbara Green became an activist for children's education—an abiding interest that led her into city politics, public affairs and consensus building. She was a founder of the 43/44 Democratic Club in the city, and became known throughout Baltimore as a person of influence and good guidance on local politics and the needs of various communities.
Her persistence earned her the respect of politicians and ordinary citizens alike, and inspired a number of civic awards and recognitions, including the 100 Outstanding Women Award of Maryland and the 1995 Fullwood Foundation Volunteer of the Year Award. Green was a board member of Associated Black Charities from 1994-98, and she served as an appointee on both the Board of Municipal and Zoning Appeals and the Baltimore Pension Board under the administration of then-Baltimore Mayor Schmoke. She also served as a board member of Threshold, Inc. of Baltimore until her death on June 20.
Green and her husband of 60 years, Julius Green, raised four children. They were among the first African-American families to reside in the 4100 block of The Alameda.
All proceeds from the inaugural Barbara A. Green Memorial Golf Tournament will go to a fund for the Barbara A. Green Threshold Scholarship at the University of Baltimore and the Cecil Kirk Recreational Program. The tournament will feature contests for the longest drive and closest to pin, a 50/50 raffle, silent auction, and giveaways. Sponsors include The Jonathan Melnick Group, Threshold, Inc., and the University of Baltimore.
Registration fee for the tournament is $100 per golfer and/or $350 per foursome. The fee for award luncheon attendees only is $50 per person. Separate charitable donations are encouraged.
Those interested in participating in or supporting the event may call 443.739.9968 to receive sign-up and pledge information.
