It's not too late for arts-oriented students to enroll as part of the University of Baltimore's new partnership with the Everyman Theatre and the Hippodrome Foundation: a performance studies specialization leading to a major in Integrated Arts, with many opportunities to study performance, writing and even the business of theater.
Announced last May, the collaboration seeks high school graduates who have undergone the rigorous performing arts curriculum at place like the Baltimore School for the Arts, Carver Center for Arts and Technology, Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts and others, but who nonetheless face financial and other barriers that make college a hard-to-reach goal.
The pathway, entitled Performance Studies: Baltimore, is based on the ensemble model of performance training. Students will find a platform of enhanced postsecondary educational opportunities to further develop their careers through experiential learning, rigor and mentoring. Everyman Theatre and the Hippodrome will provide access to experts to make this model one of the most unique college-level theater options in the country.
Performance Studies: Baltimore is an extension of UB's existing Integrated Arts program in its Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences. In the coming days, UB will announce the curriculum for the new collaboration, which will focus on the experiential potential of a guided, performative ensemble. Everyman Theatre and the Hippodrome Foundation will offer mentoring opportunities, lectures and residencies with artists on a visiting basis. The Performance Studies: Baltimore curriculum will focus on the "teach to performance" model; the University’s performing arts series, Spotlight UB, will promote each ensemble’s spring semester performances.
