A staged reading of Shakespeare's Hamlet will take place at the University of Baltimore on Wednesday, Oct. 12 as part of UB's Spotlight UB series of live performances. Directed by local theatre artist Susan Stroupe and featuring a cast of Baltimore-based actors and a number of members of the UB community, including faculty, students, and alumnus Mike Smith in the title role. The reading will begn at 5:30 p.m. in the Wright Theater in the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. It is free and open to the public.
The reading is a direct collaboration with Virginia Carruthers, a member of the adjunct faculty in the University's Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences and an expert in the works of Shakespeare. Prof. Carruthers's students will attend the reading during their class time. The play's producer, Kimberley Lynne, fellow faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences and arts and theater manager, believes that when live performance is attached to academic curriculum, it increases student interest and comprehension.
