Andres Rodriguez Reyes, a visiting scholar from the University of Matanzas in Cuba, will deliver a keynote address, "Cultural Identity and Syncretism in Cuba," at the University of Baltimore on Monday, Oct. 17. Prof. Reyes, who led the course of study for the UB Cuba Study Abroad trip last June, will deliver his talk beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Town Hall in the H. Mebane Turner Learning Commons, 1415 Maryland Ave. The event is free and open to the public, although space is limited and an R.S.V.P. is required. Attendance details are listed below.
Reyes is a professor of religion and society on the faculty of social sciences and humanities at the University of Matanzas, Cuba. He specializes in the study of Afro-Cuban religions, spiritualism and religious/spiritual communication in the province of Matanzas.
Syncretism is the joining together of various beliefs and discrete traditions, especially in religious studies and practices, to reveal shared underlying principles and work toward an inclusionary approach to various faiths and traditions. Syncretism also can be found in artistic expression from multi-cultural perspectives, and in politics.
