The University of Baltimore's Emerging Voices Project—a showcase for new artists from the UB community to try out their creative works—will kick off its final run on May 24. Part of the University's Spotlight UB series of live performances, EVP's roster is made up of writers and performers who want to generate audience feedback about their works in progress.
EVP was established in 2009 to feature the work of UB community members, produced in an onstage setting. Audience members are encouraged to offer constructive feedback to the artist, who may use their invaluable commentary to hone their vision. Spotlight UB is dedicated to providing high-quality performance programming to the UB community, and throughout its run has fcused on developing the talents of local writers, performers, and artists. All Emerging Voices events are free and open to the public, and are held in the Wright Theater in the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave.
EVP 2018 begins on Thursday, May 24 at 8 p.m. with a performance of Prof. Marion Winik's new, one-woman show, Portrait of the Artist as a Sad Little Girl in New Jersey. A memoirist, NPR commentator and associate professor in UB's Klein Family School of Communications Design, Winik has had more than 10 book published. Her debut novel, The Acknowledgements, is out for submission. Winik's EVP performance tells the story of her teenage alter ego, through a poignant blend of poetry, image and music. With the work in development, she is relying on the audience for feedback.
EVP's final event will be a staged reading of Black Maggies III, the third play in the Black Maggies cycle by Sharea Harris, M.F.A. '16, adjunct professor in the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences. The new play is a direct sequel to Black Maggies, Harris's exploration of a universe where balance is maintained by a secret network of black women practitioners of magic who serve as the nexus of the spiritual and the secular. Harris, who staged Black Maggies during 2015 and 2016 Emerging Voices Projects, has published a collection of poetry, Dictionary. Directed by Arts and Theater Manager Kimberley Lynne and cast with UB and local actors, Black Maggies III will be performed in the Wright Theater on Thursday, May 31 at 7 p.m.
This final EVP performance marks the end of the 11-year run of Spotlight UB. More than 23,000 attendees attended 200+ Spotlight UB events, ranging from musical concerts to workshops of new plays, to fully staged productions of social justice theatre, to spoken-word events and film series.
Reduced rate parking is available on event nights at the UB Maryland Avenue Garage, located on Maryland Avenue between Biddle and Chase streets, or in the Fitzgerald Garage on Oliver Street; a voucher will be provided at the box office, and the UB shuttle is available to transport patrons between the venue and the garage.
