The University of Baltimore community is mourning the loss of Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, J.D. '82, who died suddenly on May 10.
Kamenetz was born and raised in Baltimore County and attended public schools there. He earned a bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1979, and went on to graduate from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1982. He was admitted to the Maryland Bar that same year, then took a job as an assistant state's attorney in Baltimore, where he served until 1987.
Kamenetz was a member of the Baltimore County Council from 1994 to 2010. That year, he ran successfully for Baltimore County Executive, a position he held until his death. Several months ago, Kamenetz announced that he was a candidate for Maryland governor.
"Kevin Kamenetz was a strong proponent for education and a real believer in our state’s public colleges and universities," said UB President Kurt L. Schmoke. "Through many years of public life, Kevin showed an understanding of the issues of ordinary people and a determination to help in any way he could. We were proud to call him an alumnus of UB. He will be greatly missed."
