The University of Baltimore GameLab and the Maryland Historical Society are partnering to present a virtual reality exhibition of two of Maryland's most famous ships, the USS Constellation and the USS Baltimore, in a special one-day display on Thursday, Nov. 1, from noon until 2 p.m. at the MDHS, 201 W. Monument St. in Baltimore.
The virtual 3-D models of these and other historic vessels, created by UB students Deswyn Carrington, Benjamin Perry, Cesar Ricardo, Eric Ra, Joseph Bull and John Scott working in the GameLab, involve the mapping of architectural drawings to a point-by-point 3-D simulation of how the ships looked, inside and out.
Sujan Shrestha, assistant professor in the Division of Science, Information Arts and Technologies, and program director for the Simulation and Game Design program, says the concept marries the accuracy of the original drawings to the capabilities of today's computer technology. After taking a cruise aboard the Living Classroom Foundation's Lady Maryland, a teaching replica of a colonial-era cargo ship, Shrestha recognized the potential of recreating the learning experiences in a virtual environment.
"I thought, what if we could deploy 3-D virtual reality technology to help people understand how historic ships were constructed and used?"
