University of Baltimore President Kurt L. Schmoke has been named to The Baltimore Sun's 2019 Business and Civic Hall of Fame. The former mayor of Baltimore City joins other local luminaries such as retired U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes, Abell Foundation President Robert Embry and acclaimed film director and author John Waters in receiving the accolade.
"In 1987, Kurt Schmoke became the first African American elected mayor of Baltimore City, and during his three terms he proved an ahead-of-his-time thinker on issues like drug addiction and low-income housing," the Sun writes. "After leaving office, he served as dean of Howard University Law School, and in 2014, he became president of the University of Baltimore."
The newspaper will celebrate this year's honorees at an induction dinner in June.
