The winners of the University of Baltimore's 2019 Inspired Discoveries undergraduate research and creative presentations have been announced. This annual program encourages students to talk about their work before the UB community. Projects may include original efforts by individuals or teams. Inspired Discoveries is a collaboration of the Bogomolny Library, the Helen P. Denit Honors Program, and the Office of the Provost.
The winner in the research category is William Herman, a history major, who completed a study of World War II and UB by focusing on the editor of the BALOO, the name of the UB newspaper at that time. Herman conducted his research in the archives of the University's Bogomolny Library, and uncovered first-hand what was on the minds of the UB students during the war.
The Inspired Discoveries award in the creative category goes to the "Poegrammers" team: Juan Pablo Soto, William Hyland, Larysa Paliaschuk. Osman Martinez, John Manlucu, Karl-Heinz Gilbert-Wason and Eric Ra. The team presented on their entry in the NASA Spacesuit User Interface Technologies for Students (NASA SUITS). The students spent the past several months coding their augmented reality-based prototypes and preparing for a test of their concept, which they showed to NASA officials at the Johnson Space Center in April. The students are from UB's undergraduate programs in Applied Information Technology and Simulation and Game Design.

Christine Spencer, dean of the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, where all of the 2019 Inspired Disocoveries winners are working on their degrees, told the participants, "I couldn't be prouder of all of our students and the faculty who work with you. Thank you all for being part of the CAS family and engaging in such interesting and important work. Great things are not only possible at UB but they are happening all the time!"
