In a conversation with University of Maryland, Baltimore President Bruce E. Jarrell, University of Baltimore President Kurt L. Schmoke says that encouragement is an ideal way to ensure that people, from an early age, are able to reach their potential in life.
"I have been blessed by having a lot of people encouraging me at a very early age to achieve more than I thought I could achieve," Schmoke says. "And when you think about that, so many of our young people growing up now don't have that kind of encouragement."
The online conversation between the two presidents focused on politics and policy, and it explored the work that institutions must do to address deep-seated obstacles to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Pres. Schmoke, who grew up in West Baltimore and served as city state's attorney before being elected mayor of Baltimore, where he served three terms from 1987 to 1999, says he believes personal and professional success comes from access to opportunity and a commitment to lifelong learning. Alongside those elements is the importance of setting a goal.
"Always have a goal," he says.
