A University of Baltimore class on local and regional history, co-taught by Prof. Joshua Clark Davis and UBalt President Kurt L. Schmoke, is featured in the Dec. 21 edition of The Baltimore Sun. The article details the insights that Schmoke, former mayor of Baltimore, brings to the class—and how the teaching of local history can contribute to the lives of tomorrow's leaders. The course featured tours of city neighborhoods, guest speakers, along with thje perspectives of Baltimore's first elected Black leader.
"The former mayor believes in the transformative power of education and wants his students to think critically about the decisions that built Baltimore, including his own," the article states.
"'I wasn't looking at this as an opportunity for my personal reflection,'" Pres. Schmoke notes in the article. "'It was helpful to the students who were using this class to think about how they can address problems facing Baltimore in the future by knowing about the problems the city has faced.'"
