Prof. Jeffrey Ian Ross of The University of Baltimore's School of Criminal Justice tells WBFF-TV that Baltimore's acquisition of new federal funding to fight crime must come with an evaluation of what is producing positive results in both crime reduction and the perception of public safety.
"I'd like to see some sort of evaluation done on existing programs—the efficiency of those programs" before devoting resources to efforts that might not be effective in fighting crime and enhancing public safety, Ross says.
Prof. Ross suggests that agencies should gather empirical evidence that programs are making a difference in curbing crime in the city.
"People want to know that if money is going to be spent, it's going to be spent wisely," he says.
