Interviewed by VoyageBaltimore magazine, Jane Delury, professor in the MFA program in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts in The University of Baltimore's Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences and director of its undergraduate program in English, says that writing fiction while also teaching writing can lead to a community—of friends, fellow writers, and readers.
"Ultimately, writing fiction is a solitary task," Delury says. "You sit at your desk and hope to be transported into another dimension by your characters. Nonetheless, I've found it incredibly helpful to have a writing community."
Now preparing for the publication of her second novel, Prof. Delury says she combined her creative life with that of her love for teaching early in her career. Now, she says, she enjoys exploring creative outlets alongside her students, many of whom are just starting out as both producers and fans of great writing.
"I love helping my students to develop their writerly voices and sensibilities while becoming more passionate readers of great literature," she says.
