Joshua Penrod, MBA '10, an adjunct faculty member in The University of Baltimore's Merrick School of Business, is the recipient of the 2024 Richard Bucher Award for Adjunct Faculty. Penrod was nominated for the honor by Raju Balakrishnan, dean of the Merrick School. The University Faculty Senate Awards Committee approved the nomination.
The Bucher Award is named for a long-time adjunct faculty member who set a high bar for the institution's adjunct educators by delivering not only solid teaching to deserving students, but also a strong commitment to service, camaraderie within the community, and excellence in academic research and writing. The award recognizes UBalt adjunct faculty who embody these values. It includes a $1,500 cash prize, along with a recognition ceremony with friends, family and colleagues.
In his letter of nomination, Dean Balakrishnan wrote: "Like Richard Bucher himself, Josh serves his profession, the community, and the students of the Merrick School of Business in ways that are truly exceptional."
He "has served as a valued adjunct member since 2017, teaching a variety of graduate marketing classes. He is the current Vice Chair of the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee and is an expert not only in the discipline of marketing, but also in pedagogy. He is truly our unicorn—the faculty member with knowledge, expertise, and credentials in the discipline; scholarly research in pedagogy that's put into practice; and a desire to engage with students in meaningful ways."
Dr. Penrod serves as senior vice president of Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association in Annapolis, a global trade association for the world's largest source for plasma collectors and manufacturers of plasma-derived biological products. He has also worked as a legal consultant for the World Health Organization and in various research and policy roles. His strong record of publications and presentations makes him a leader in this industry.
In addition to his University of Baltimore MBA, Penrod holds a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech, a J.D. from Cooley Law School, an LL.M. and an MPH from George Washington University, and a B.A. in philosophy and history from Washington and Jefferson College, as well as other academic credentials.
At UBalt, Penrod teaches marketing in the MBA program.
