A group of students and professors from The University of Baltimore recently completed a collaborative project with their counterparts from the University of Palermo in Sicily, resulting in an assessment of a county's environmental sustainability efforts and a national health care provider's local facility. According to down to earth, a quarterly newsletter produced by the Carroll County Bureau of Resource Management and the Bureau of Utilities, the Winter School collaboration provided graduate students with a thorough understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
"The program aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for fostering long-term sustainability and resilience through socio-economic, cultural, and ecological transitions," according to down to earth, which featured the Winter School initatiuve in its fall 2024 edition. "The students will learn to compare and analyze urban contexts like Palermo and Baltimore, each with its own unique socio-economic, cultural, and ecological profiles."
In early October, a group of graduate students and faculty visited Carroll County for a tour of its SDG-related operations, including wastewater treatment, stormwater management, water quality monitoring, and agricultural preservation.
Tina DiFranco, professor of the practice in UBalt's School of Health and Human Services, part of College of Public Affairs, says the Winter School experience followed the program's study abroad session in Palermo in June 2024.
"We also toured Hopkins Bayview as part of the winter session and held a number of learning sessions with invited lectures by leaders in the healthcare industry," Prof. DiFranco says. "We took our students to them in the summer and they brought their students to us in October. Now that's collaboration!"
