Alternative Spring Break: Food Security and Nutrition in Mullens, WV
Join other UB students, trip leaders, and staff for an alternative break, March 16-21, 2014!
Learn about the connection between rural poverty and nutrition in the heart of the economically distressed counties is Mullens, WV., where the rural poverty rate is 20.4%--5 points higher than the urban poverty rate.
Our Alternative Break team will work with Rural Appalachian Improvement League, Inc. (RAIL) in Mullens, WV, whose mission is to improve education, foster economic development, increase community engagement, and develop community and environmental initiatives. Projects may include: a community health fair, home repairs and improvements, and cooking for residents.

Participants depart on Sunday, March 16 and return on Friday, March 21.
The application process is selective. The selection committee will consider all of the application materials when making decisions. Those who are not selected will be added to a waitlist and may be invited to join the trip if additional space becomes available. Space is limited to 13 students.

Applications must be completed by Friday, Jan. 24, 2014. Participants will be notified of their status by Friday, Jan. 31.
The cost for the trip is $65. Once selected, students will have one week to submit payment. Students must apply, submit payment, sign a liability waiver, and enroll in the course in order to secure a place on the trip.
