When:
Location:
H. Mebane Turner Learning Commons
Room:

Description:

Join Natalie J. Sokoloff, Professor Emerita of Sociology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and The Graduate Center, City University of New York, for a discussion on collateral consequences and the harm they do. Dr. Sokoloff will give a lecture followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.

Collateral consequences refer to extra-judicial or wide-reaching consequences of arrest and incarceration. They are punishments that people forget about or are not aware of that are “tacked on” to arrest or incarceration, such as political disenfranchisement and heavy fines. Other negative consequences include tremendous stigma, the inability or difficulty to obtain social welfare, public housing, employment, education (especially higher education), and family reunification as well as immigrant deportation. Dr. Sokoloff will discuss collateral consequences in the U.S. and here in Maryland, recent changes in the law, what is being done to challenge them and barriers to these challenges.

FREE and open to the public.
