Description:

All members of the UB community are cordially invited to join UB Sophomore Seminar students from Professor Elaine Witman’s CPA UNIV202 course in hosting Dr. Roland Pattillo, who will discuss Baltimore-area resident Henrietta Lacks’ contributions to medical science.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, UB’s Common Read book, features the following introduction to Dr. Pattillo, M.D., Professor Emeritus, and 30-year acting Chair of the Department of Gynecology & Obstetrics and Gynecological Oncology at the Morehouse School of Medicine:

“Pattillo grew up in the thirties, the son of a blacksmith turned railroad worker in a small segregated Louisiana town. He was the first in his family to go to school, and when he learned about Henrietta as a postdoctoral fellow in Guy’s lab, he felt immediately connected to her. He’d wanted to honor her contributions to science ever since. So on October 11, 1996, at Morehouse School of Medicine, he organized the first annual HeLa Cancer Control Symposium. He invited researchers from around the world to present scientific papers on cancer in minorities, and he petitioned the city of Atlanta to name October 11, the date of the conference, Henrietta Lacks Day. The city agreed and gave him an official proclamation from the mayor’s office.”

Dr. Pattillo was the first African- American medical student to work at the Johns Hopkins Hospital laboratory where the HeLa cells were the cornerstone of Dr. Guy’s medical research. Every year, Dr. Pattillo speaks at the Johns Hopkins Henretta Lacks Memorial Lecture on the Contributions of Henrietta Lacks and HeLa to Medical Science.
