Fado: Music to Our Ears

What is Fado?

An example of a traditional Portugese guitar.

(Article reprinted from The Merrick Exchange, the official newsletter of the Merrick School of Business)

Ever heard of fado? Think it's a new soft drink, or an iPod knockoff? Think again. It's the national music of Portugal, an entrancing mix of familiar and unfamiliar sounds that is notable for its use of a unique stringed instrument-the Portuguese guitar. The instrument's design, tuning, sound, and even the way it is played are different than the qualities of any other guitar from anywhere else in the world. Fado is so closely linked to Portugal that it is widely acknowledged as a cultural metaphor for the nation, the equivalent of American jazz or Scottish folk. Now, an effort is underway to further popularize fado, and the Merrick School of Business is playing a critical role in the work.

New Library Catalog Makes the World(Cat) Local

(Article reprinted from The Langsdale Link, the official newsletter of the Langsdale Library.)

Langsdale Library has a new search interface for its online catalog, called WorldCat Local. With this catalog you can search for books (and some articles) owned by libraries all over the world. While that may seem overwhelming at first blush, the benefits are significant: You'll be able to first view books and articles owned by Langsdale, followed by those owned by other libraries. In other words, you can see what's available here at Langsdale first; then, if you want to explore further, you merely need to scroll down the results list. If you're searching for books outside UB just make use of links that allow you to request your selection from another library. And if you have ever been confused by our system for requesting books from other campuses (which, in certain circumstances, is way too complicated), you will appreciate that WorldCat Local will automatically send your request to the correct place.
