Employee Workshops

The Office of Human Resources is offering the following workshops for all UB employees:

Critical Thinking and Decision Making
Oct. 6, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Location: William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center 223

Is critical thinking important in the workplace? Is effective decision making imperative for workplace success? Of course they are - yet knowing isn't enough. When lacking in the workplace, it's common to see less-than-optimal products and services, group conformity, lack of creativity, and reduced effectiveness of decisions. This workshop will provide techniques to balance and incorporate critical thinking and decision making into everyday activities. You will learn to improve your evaluation and analysis of ideas, determine the best courses of action, resolve problems, and make sound decisions. Join Mike Noll, training specialist at Towson University, for this fun and informative workshop.

Interest-based Negotiation
Oct. 7, 9 a.m. - noon
Location: William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center 221

Interest-based negotiation approaches negotiation as joint problem-solving.  It strives to resolve the underlying issues, needs and concerns of all parties involved. The process focuses parties on interests, rather than positions, and to use information, communication, and innovative thinking to identify superior solutions.

Develop new skills and techniques:

  • Create problem-solving from conflict
  • Put information and communication to use
  • Craft agreements to benefit both parties
  • Strengthen working relationships
  • Learn the step by step process

Learn and appreciate the principles:

  • How to focus on interests, rather than positions
  • How to generate multiple options, instead of "horse trading" over offers
  • How to listen and question until you understand the interests of others
  • How to stick to it, even when the other side plays hardball
  • How to ensure your constituency understands what you’re doing
  • How to understand the role of power
  • How to operate from knowledge of your own best interests

Navigating through Market Volatility Seminar
Oct. 13, noon - 1 p.m.
Location: William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center 221

Given substantial declines in asset values over the past year, and continued volatility on a daily basis, people may be wondering about how this will impact their goals and what to do next regarding their portfolio. In this seminar, we will discuss:

  • The dynamics of market volatility
  • What history may suggest about recovery following similar market declines
  • Specific investment strategies to help reposition your portfolio for the future

This seminar is being provided by Barbara Rishel, M.B.A. '84, B.S. '81, financial advisor with Merrill Lynch. Rishel has more than 20 years of investment experience, ranging from equity research analysis to institutional portfolio management, and holds two degrees from UB. Remember to bring your lunch to this session.

Developing Your Creativity
Oct. 28, 1:30 - 4 p.m.
Location: William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center 221

Are you naturally creative? Can creativity be learned and practiced like a skill? This workshop is based on the premise that the answer to these questions is "yes." Participants will learn some of the things that hold them back from using their natural creativity and have an opportunity to score themselves on a creative scale.

Basic Conflict Management Skills
Oct. 29, 3 - 5 p.m.
Location: William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center 221

Conflict is unavoidable. However, people often try to avoid it because they lack the basic skills necessary to manage it effectively. Learn to manage disputes and disagreements positively and proactively to harness the inherent energy conflict has to offer. Conflict is the largest reducible cost to organizations. On average, managers spend 30 percent of their time dealing with unproductive conflict. The costs of unmanaged conflict show up in things like employee turnover, decreased productivity, absenteeism, grievances and litigation. These costs are equally high, if not higher, for family and community conflicts which sometimes escalate into devastating violence. Basic conflict management training will teach you to: recognize the causes of interpersonal conflict; become more aware of emotional triggers; learn conflict management strategies to improve your communication, performance and success.

R.S.V.P. for any of these workshops via the Human Resources Training Calendar.
