Social Enterprise Alliance's Mid-Atlantic Summit

When:
Location:
William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center
Description:

The Maryland chapter of the national Social Enterprise Alliance will convene its Mid-Atlantic Summit on Monday, Sept. 24, at the University of Baltimore. The one-day event—a gathering of practitioners and researchers in the burgeoning field of social enterprise—is one of only three regional summits being held by the SEA across the country this year. Hundreds of social enterprise practitioners and advocates are expected to attend the event.

The alliance provides social enterprises with the know-how to start their ventures, and to establish an optimal environment in which they can thrive. More than 900 social enterprises, service providers, investors, corporations, public servants, academics and researchers count themselves as SEA members. The organization offers advice on best practices and building capacity, raises awareness and aggregates the impact of social enterprises. In its 2009 field study, the organization found that the top five mission foci of social enterprises were workforce development, housing, community and economic development, education, and health.

Social enterprise business models include retail, service and manufacturing businesses; contracted providers of social and human services; fee-based consulting and research services; community development and financing operations; food service and catering operations; arts organizations; and technology enterprises.

Among the topics to be covered by the Sept. 24 gathering are:

  • identify social media metrics for determining their impact on return on investment;
  • develop an effective implementation plan for performance-based management systems;
  • avoid potential issues in implementing impact measurement;
  • take another look at the why—and what is at the crux—of social enterprise;
  • invest in social impact leaders in the new economy;
  • hash out the importance of social entrepreneurship, education, and more.
