Alternative Spring Break - Mullens, West Virginia

When:
Location:

Description:

The University of Baltimore prides itself on its continuous dedication to social justice through community service. The University of Baltimore’s Alternative Break program intends to challenge students, first and foremost, to develop strategies to create social change. Through the program, students are given immersion opportunities to reflect critically on social, political and cultural issues while analyzing their role in the global community.

For some University of Baltimore students, spring break does not mean sun, fun, the beach and "Don't bother me with learning, I'm out of reach!"

Instead, a group of students are currently residing in Mullens, W. Va., where they will spend an alternative spring break examining the connections between rural poverty and nutrition. Through UB's Be More Leadership and Community Engagement program and the Rural Appalachian Improvement League, these students are taking on a powerful comunity-building and learning experience in this cold, mountainous environment.

The students were selected based on their completion of a one-credit course on rural poverty and nutrition, and on their attendance of an orientation retreat and follow-up meetings.
