The Office of Diversity and International Services wishes to celebrate Juneteenth with The University of Baltimore community. Juneteenth, also called Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, is an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in The United States of America. Juneteenth, known to many as the second Independence Day, marks when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The troops arrived two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday on June 17th 2021. The historical legacy of Juneteenth commemorates the hardships endured by enslaved African Americans and exemplifies empowerment and hopefulness.
