Join us for a screening of the 1928 film, "The Man Who Laughs," preceded by a discussion that delves into the realms of art, culture, and intellectual property law as it applies to the movie and subsequent works based on it.
"The Man Who Laughs" has a little bit of everything… romance, comedy, tragedy, swashbuckling, and a hit song! Released during the advent of “talking” pictures, it bridges the gap between silent and sound films in a way that is pretty unique. However, the film is most notable today nearly 100 years after it was released for being a huge influence on the creation of Batman’s arch nemesis The Joker.
Before the screening, there will be a short moderated discussion between two UBalt professors— Will Hubbard from the law school and Steven Leyva from the College of Arts and Sciences—where we explore the interplay between artistry and America’s legal landscape. How does the law impact what artists can and can’t create? How does it shape what we remember as a society? And what does all this have to do with Batman? Find out while you eat some popcorn!
Discussion starts at 5:30, the film will begin at 6:00 and runs approximately 2 hours
