The Office of Financial Aid can review a student’s special circumstances to determine, on a case-by-case basis, if a change in the Student Aid Index (SAI) is needed.

Below are examples of special circumstances that may be considered:
  • Loss or significant reduction of employment, wages, or unemployment compensation
  • Loss of benefits (e.g. Social Security benefits or child support)
  • Widowed, separated or divorced since filing the FAFSA

If a student has circumstances for our office to consider, submit the completed Special Circumstance Form with all required documentation. Students are notified through email account if any additional documentation needed to review your request.

  • Financial aid communications are delivered via email after a student has been admitted to The University of Baltimore.

    • Continuing students or new students  who have registered for class(es) will receive financial aid status updates and communications to their  student ubalt.edu  email account(s).
    • New students  who have not registered for class(es)  will receive financial aid status updates and communication to the email account that was provided on the admission application.

A review of students circumstances does not guarantee that they will be offered additional financial aid funds. If a student is in one of the situations below, completing the Special Circumstance process will not result in an increase in financial aid eligibility:

  • Student Aid Index (SAI) is already '0' or lower. This means the student has received the maximum financial aid award based on the timing of your financial aid application.
  • If the student is in a graduate program and have received the maximum loan amount you are eligible to receive based on federal annual loan limits.
  • If the information the student provides doesn't change the overall FAFSA calculation to allow for additional financial aid awards.
