The Laurence Short Academic Award recognizes outstanding academic performance and extracurricular activities among international students at the University of Baltimore. The award is made possible through an endowment established in 1984 by alumnus Dr. Ali Alemi and his family. Originally from Iran, Dr. Alemi received his M.S. in Urban Recreation from UB in 1982.
The Laurence Short Endowment is named in honor of Professor Laurence Short who served the University of Baltimore community for twenty-four years as Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and International Student Advisor prior to his retirement in 1984. In addition to this annual award for academic scholarship, the endowment supports an Emergency Loan Fund for F-1 students. Contributions may be made through the UB Foundation.
A cash award of $500 is given to one undergraduate, one graduate and one law F-1 student during the fall semester each year. The recipients’ names are engraved on a plague displayed in the International Services Office. They also are recognized at the annual Merit Awards Banquet sponsored by the Student Senate.
Award criteria include a 3.5 (graduate), 3.0 (undergraduate) or 2.75 (law) GPA, an extracurricular involvement sheet, and an essay entitled, "The Obstacles an International Student Must Overcome to Achieve Academic Success and How I Did So."
