U.S. Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin, junior senator for the State of Maryland, will discuss the effects of potential health care reform on the legal profession on Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the University of Baltimore School of Law's Venable Baetjer Howard Moot Court Room. The discussion, beginning at 7:45 a.m., is free and open to the public. Space is limited; an R.S.V.P. is requested (see below).
Cardin was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1987, where he represented Maryland's Third Congressional District. He was elected to succeed longtime Maryland Sen. Paul Sarbanes in the U.S. Senate in 2006. Cardin currently serves on the Foreign Relations, Judiciary, Environment and Public Works, Budget and Small Business committees.
Cardin has made health care reform one of the primary issues of his service in the Senate. In 2007, he introduced the Universal Health Coverage Act, a predecessor to the 2009 Access for All America Act currently in committee. In 2008, he was instrumental in making sure that a guaranteed dental benefit was included in the reauthorization of the Children's Health Insurance Program. His health care reform platform includes reducing or eliminating charges for preventative care, ending discrimination against pre-existing conditions and abolishing annual or lifetime caps on benefits for patients.
Cardin graduated first in his class from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1967. After passing the bar that year, he embarked on a career in public service, starting with almost 20 years in the Maryland House of Delegates. He served as Speaker of the House of Delegates from 1979 through 1986.
This presentation will inaugurate the fall a.m. LAW series at the School of Law. In addition to the Sept. 29 discussion, three other sessions are scheduled on Tuesday mornings throughout the fall semester. A full schedule can be found here. All a.m. LAW sessions are free and open to the public, and each is preceded by a complimentary continental breakfast and networking session.
Please R.S.V.P. for the Cardin event online.
