Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler will discuss his recent finding that Maryland law and evolving public policy supports the recognition of same-sex marriages as permitted in a handful of other states, in a panel discussion for the University of Baltimore School of Law's Law and Public Policy series on Tuesday, March 23. The session, free and open to the public, will take place beginning at noon in the School of Law's Moot Court Room, 1415 Maryland Ave. (Attendance details below.)
On Feb. 24, Gansler issued an opinion that state law supports the recognition of same-sex marriages if valid where entered. The issue was addressed in comments filed by nearly 70 faculty members and both deans at Maryland's two law schools. The opinion, which adopts much of the reasoning of the law faculty comments, raises a number of important and interesting questions of law and public policy.
Joining Gansler at the March 23 session will be Jane Murphy, associate dean for Academic Affairs and professor in the School of Law, and former Maryland Attorney General Joseph Curran, LL.B. '59. The panel will explore a number of questions surrounding the Gansler opinion as well as the history of Maryland's recognition of same-sex relationships.
This Law and Public Policy event is co-sponsored by the School of Law's Family Law Association.
Due to limited seating, pre-registration for this event is recommended but not required. To register, go here.
