Stephen Harris, former chief public defender for Maryland and distinguished attorney in residence at the University of Baltimore School of Law, will receive the Robert M. Bell Award for Leadership in Public Service during a special ceremony on Friday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. The event, part of the annual silent and live auction to benefit UB Students for Public Interest Law (UBSPI), will take place at the Belvedere, 1 E. Chase St. in Baltimore. The ceremony and auction are presented by the School of Law.
Harris, who resigned last May from the public defender’s post, now teaches the UB School of Law’s Stephen L. Snyder Center for Litigation Skills. The center, established in 2000 by alumnus and nationally acclaimed trial lawyer Stephen L. Snyder, emphasizes skills training in written advocacy and litigation skills. The center trains ethical and responsible advocates to serve the public on behalf of private citizens, business and government.
The auction entry cost – $20 general admission and $10 for UB students – includes the opportunity to bid on items such as a day at the races for 25 at the Maryland Jockey Club; a day spent with a local public defender, including a possible crime scene investigation; a family membership to the Baltimore Museum of Industry; gift certificates to the Elkridge Furnace Inn; complimentary greens fees for Golf at River Run Golf Club; a wine tasting and tour for 12 at Woodhall Wine Cellars; and dozens more unusual and original items and services. Proceeds from the auction will fund summer grants for UB law students to work for public interest organizations.
UBSPI provides summer stipends for law students who work in public interest jobs to help the poor and underrepresented gain equal access to the justice system.
