Good lawyers always have a solid grasp of the facts, but great lawyers also know how to present those facts—how to tell the story—in order to effectively manage the courtroom and drive toward the desired outcome. Whether the attorney is representing a plaintiff in a divorce case or defending someone accused of murder, the way that person's story is told in front of a judge and jury can be just as important as the facts of the case.
On Tuesday, Sept. 18 beginning at 8 a.m., the University of Baltimore School of Law's a.m. LAW seminar will present a special event on this topic, entitled "Effective Communication: The One Who Tells the Story Controls the Courtroom." Free and open to the public, this event will feature a discussion led by Marcus Z. Shar, partner with Shar, Rosen & Warshaw, LLC and a nationally recognized medical malpractice attorney. Shar is listed in The Best Lawyers in America; he is a fellow in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers and was one of the first two lawyers in the nation to be named a diplomat of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America's National College of Advocacy.
The discussion, the latest in the a.m. LAW Ginsberg Seminar Series, will take place in the Venable Baetjer Howard Moot Court Room in the School of Law, 1415 Maryland Ave.
Shar's talk will explore the effective use of storytelling as perhaps the most persuasive trial technique. He will explain why the use of story is important; how lawyers can learn to recognize the multitude of stories present in any case, and how they can choose the right story to tell.
The a.m. LAW Ginsberg Seminar Series is made possible through a gift by the late Rhona Ginsberg to honor her father and uncle, Hyman Ginsberg and Isidore Ginsberg, respectively, for their combined 100 years of teaching at the UB School of Law. Each spring and fall of the academic year, legal experts come to campus to present interesting and informative programs on current issues in the practice of law in Maryland. All seminars are free and open to the public.
