The Laramie Project, a moving and haunting examination of the 1998 murder of University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard, the trial of his killers, and their community's social attitudes, will be performed Nov. 4-6 at 8 p.m. in the University of Baltimore's Student Center Performing Arts Theater, 11 W. Mt. Royal Ave. Spotlight UB's presentation of the play will include a panel discussion about hate crimes in Baltimore on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center's Bogomolny Room, adjacent to the theater. Ticket information is listed below.
The Laramie Project was conceived by New York's Tectonic Theatre Project as a response to Shepard's murder. The play is structured around hundreds of interviews with Laramie, Wy. residents, along with news reports and company members' personal journal entries. It opened in February 2000, and has since been performed nationally and internationally. The play's literary merit has been recognized both here and abroad; it is is often used to aid discussions about prejudice, tolerance and citizenship.
UB's three performances of the play will be directed by John C. Wilson. The cast is a mixture of campus and local actors, in keeping with Spotlight's dedication to community outreach.
The Nov. 6 panel will feature a representative from CASA de Maryland and Rabbi Elissa Sachs-Kohen from Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, among others.
Tickets for The Laramie Project are $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors, and $5 for UB students and alumni. Tickets are available at www.etix.com (search under University of Baltimore). Tickets also can be purchased at the theater beginning one hour prior to the performance.
Reduced rate parking is available on event nights at UB's Maryland Avenue Garage, located on Maryland Avenue between Biddle and Chase streets, or the Fitzgerald Garage on Oliver Street; a voucher will be provided at the box office. The UB shuttle is available to transport patrons between the venue and the garage.
