Two legendary (notorious?) John Waters films, Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos, will be screened on Friday, March 4, as part of Spotlight UB's You Be Cinema program. The double feature will take place at 7 and 9 p.m. respectively, with Female Trouble shown first. The films will be introduced by local film historian George Figgs and Waters-film mainstay Mink Stole.
Female Trouble, released in 1974, is about murderous beauticians and the relationships they forge between art and crime. Described by the Dallas Morning News as "one of John Waters's best and most notorious movies," Female Trouble is just as subversive as the director's more acclaimed films, like Pink Flamingos, but it takes a different direction. Female Trouble stars Waters regulars Divine, Mink Stole and Edith Massey.
Pink Flamingos, shown at 9 p.m., is arguably John Waters' signature film, and is still regarded as a landmark of boundary-pushing and taboo-breaking cinema. Divine portrays Babs Johnson, who is seeking the title of "the filthiest person in the world." The 1972 film has been protested, harshly edited and outright banned all over the world, but remains a beloved cult classic on par with The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Alongside Divine, the film features Mink Stole and David Lochary—with a special appearance by George Figgs.
Co-presenter Figgs is a film historian, projectionist and actor, having broken into movies as one of Waters's regular cast members. He also owned and operated the Orpheum Cinema from 1991 to 1999.
Co-presenter Mink Stole is an actress, writer and musician who has appeared in every Waters film to date. She produced the "Think Mink" column for the Baltimore City Paper for a number of years. Outside of her work with Waters, she has appeared in the films But I'm A Cheerleader and Stuck!, and is the lead singer of Mink Stole and Her Wonderful Band.
Tickets for the Waters double feature are $4, and are available at www.etix.com; please search under University of Baltimore. Tickets can also be purchased at the venue beginning one hour prior to the performance.
