Spring 2011 UB Spotlight Events Announced

The University of Baltimore's Spotlight UB performing arts series for spring 2011 Spotlight UB series features an eclectic span of performances including classical music, opera, film and theater. The season will continue the University's artistic partnership with the Aspen Ensemble, the Baltimore Lab School, and film historian George Figgs, host of You Be Cinema. In addition, Spotlight UB will furthering its commitment to social justice theatre by producing Daniel Berrigan's The Trial of the Catonsville Nine in February.
The series takes place in UB's Performing Arts Theater, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. Ticket information for all performances is listed below.
Spotlight UB's spring schedule is as follows:
The Trial of the Catonsville Nine
Feb. 10-12, 7 p.m.
$15 general, $10 senior and UB staff and $5 student and UB alumni. Directed by Raine Bode, the play will feature a panel of Baltimore activists on Feb. 12, moderated by Fred Guy, director of UB's Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics.
African Heritage Festival
Feb. 24, 11:30 a.m.
Free to the public, this celebration of song and dance includes storytelling with Janice and the Griot and the musical entertainment of the Baltimore Lab School, the Empowerment School and Patterson Park Public Charter. Part of the University's African American Arts Festival, the event is co-sponsored with the UB's International and Multicultural Student Services Office.
Bootprints
Feb. 24, 8 p.m.
Free to the public, UB alumnus Latonia Valincia's one-woman powerhouse of a play examines what it means to be a woman of color in America. Part of the African American Arts Festival.
Lafayette Gilchrist and William Parker
Feb. 25, 7 p.m.
$5 general admission. Critically-acclaimed jazz pianist Lafayette Gilchrist performs with double bassist legend William Parker. Part of the African American Arts Festival.
You Be Cinema Double Feature: Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos
March 4, 7 p.m.
$4 general admission. You Be Cinema's double feature of the John Waters classics Female Trouble (7 p.m.) and Pink Flamingos (9 p.m.), hosted by film historian George Figgs.
Robert Hitz: Improvisational Piano
March 18, 8 p.m.
$15 general admisison, $10 for students and $5 for UB students. Robert Hitz's piano concert features improvisations mutually and uniquely inspired by the audience.
Contemporary Opera Trio
April 1-2, 7:30 p.m.
(Ticket prices to be announced.) Three world-premiere operas written by Baltimore composers and produced by The Figaro Project.
Stars of Tomorrow
April 9, 7:30 p.m.
(Ticket prices to be announced.) Some of the most brilliant rising stars in classical music perform a spring concert from the Heifetz International Music Institute.
The Aspen Ensemble
April 14, 7 p.m.
$25 general, $20 seniors, $5 students and UB alumni. The Aspen Ensemble performs Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn. Hosted by WBJC radio personality Jonathan Palevsky.
Across Words
April 30, 7 p.m.
(Ticket prices to be announced.) Storytelling and art that crosses boundaries and creates community, Across Words is a night of poetry and music presented by CityLit Project and Ravolution Media.
Peter Minkler, Rita Costanzi, Toshiko Kohno
May 25, 7 p.m.
$10 general, $5 UB students. Baker Award-winning violist Peter Minkler performs with world-renowned harpist Rita Costanzi and National Symphony Orchestra principal flutist Toshiko Kohno in a premiere concert by their newly formed trio, melisme.

Parking for Spotlight events is available for patrons in UB garages: weekends at the Fitzgerald at 80 W. Oliver Street and weeknights at Maryland Avenue garage at Maryland and Biddle for $7 with a chaser ticket. The chaser tickets are available at the Spotlight box office at the event.
