Christine S. Spencer, dean of the University of Baltimore's Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences and a nationally recognized expert in healthcare administration, tells STAT that while it is true that hospitals provide care for all, it is understood inside the profession that a priority is given to those who are privately insured.
Dean Spencer was quoted in a STAT article about a recent statement from the head of the Mayo Clinic who acknowledged the priority in a discussion about changing profit margins in an era of more Medicare and Medicaid patients.
"There is this thought that hospitals treat whoever comes to their door, but this is a statement that lays out what happens," Spencer says. "It's a surprise to hear it out loud like that, but hospitals, probably for decades, have engaged in these more subtle attempts to get privately insured patients over Medicaid or the uninsured."
