The Bob Parsons Veterans Center will honor the veterans of The University of Baltimore community with a week of events leading into Veterans Day.
"Veterans' Day is important to me because it is the one day a year that we set aside as a nation to honor the veterans in our community for the sacrifices and contributions that they have made to our communities both large and small," says Josiah Guthland, center director and a U.S. Army combat veteran. "Veterans from all branches of the service walk among us every day. We do not know the hardships that they have had to endure, the battles that they have fought, and what sacrifices they have made to ensure that our imperfect, yet still wonderful country, is a bastion of liberty around the world."
The week of activities officially begins on Saturday, Nov. 5, when veteran alumni and current students from UBalt are invited to join veteran students from Towson University and several community colleges for a Hometown Heroes football game at Towson's Johnny Unitas Stadium.
In the week leading up to Veterans Day, UBalt's College of Public Affairs and Merrick School of Business will sponsor lunches for veteran students, staff and faculty on campus. John McGrory, a managing director for Morgan Stanley, and Matt Scassero, M.P.A. '17, and a Navy veteran, have been invited to serve as guest speakers.
The entire University community is invited to a special Veterans Day ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 11:30 a.m. on the University's Gordon Plaza. UBalt President Kurt L. Schmoke, veteran student Patrick Gengler, Guthland, and Dena Allen-Few, UBalt's coordinator for veteran and military support services, are scheduled to speak. A lunch for the veteran UBalt community and invited guests will follow.
