Some of the most stunning examples of 20th century American poster art, produced by the legendary Globe Poster Co. of Baltimore, are now on exhibit in the University of Baltimore's Student Center Gallery. The gallery is located on the fifth floor of the Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The exhibit will continue through Dec. 16.
Globe Poster was founded in 1929 during a card game in Philadelphia. At the table, Norman Goldstein, a wealthy New Yorker, and Harry Shapiro, a Philadelphia printer, decided to go into business together. To settle on a location for their company, they took a map of the East Coast, folded it and opened it up. The crease was on Baltimore, so that's where they started.
Since then, Globe Poster became the pre-eminent printer of most of the touring R&B, blues, and rock and roll acts of the 1950s, '60s and '70s. Using the original letterpresses, inks, and 24 weight card stock, the posters seen in this exhibit faithfully replicate the original works. Notably, the company's current owner, Frank Cicero, B.A. '66, is an alumnus of the History program in UB's Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts.
The gallery is open Mondays to Fridays from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., and Sundays from noon until 4 p.m.
